Digimagaz.com – In a recent interview with Spanish publication El Pais, Jorge Mas, part-owner of Inter Miami, revealed that Lionel Messi’s contract with the club is worth between $50 and $60 million per year. This makes Messi the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer (MLS) by a staggering margin of over $40 million, according to sports salary tracker Spotrac. Currently, Xherdan Shaqiri holds the top spot with an annual wage of $8,153,000.

Although Messi’s on-pitch earnings fall short of his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who now earns a $75 million playing salary with Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr, according to Forbes, his contract comes with additional perks. Mas confirmed that once Messi retires, he will become a part-owner of the club. Furthermore, Messi will receive a share of the profits from MLS’ broadcasting deal with Apple TV and the team’s kit sales from Adidas. The inclusion of the Apple TV stipulation was described by Mas as “very important” in finalizing the agreement.

According to Mas, negotiations surrounding Messi’s arrival spanned three years and involved Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, as well as fellow co-owner David Beckham. Mas stated that Beckham only discussed football matters with Messi during their talks.

The owners of Inter Miami are optimistic about the league’s growth potential following Messi’s arrival. Mas stated in the El Pais interview that the World Cup-winning captain’s presence will elevate the league to new heights, making it one of the top two or three leagues in the world.

Regarding other players joining Messi at Inter Miami, Mas confirmed the signing of former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets, emphasizing the importance of surrounding Messi with players of his caliber. Mas also revealed ongoing discussions with two more of Messi’s former Barcelona teammates, namely Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez, as well as Messi’s compatriot Angel Di Maria, who most recently played for Juventus.
