Digimagaz.com – Manchester United’s Harry Maguire expressed his profound disappointment after being stripped of the club captaincy following talks with manager Erik ten Hag. Maguire, who joined United for a staggering £80 million in 2019, was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020 when Ashley Young departed for Inter Milan.

The talented defender had been a mainstay in the starting lineup for the majority of his first three seasons with the club. However, his status diminished under the tenure of Erik ten Hag, who arrived in 2022 and subsequently signed Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. As a result, Maguire found himself relegated to the bench, with Raphael Varane, Martinez, and Victor Lindelof preferred over him.

Throughout the season, Maguire managed to make 31 appearances across various competitions. However, these opportunities often arose due to injuries suffered by Varane, Martinez, and Lindelof. In Maguire’s absence, midfielders Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes were often handed the captain’s armband. It is widely expected that one of them will assume the role permanently in the upcoming season.

Taking to Twitter, Maguire confirmed the change in captaincy: “After discussions with the manager today, he has informed me that he is changing the captain. He shared his reasons with me, and although I am personally extremely disappointed, I remain fully committed whenever I don the shirt.”

Maguire went on to express his gratitude to the Manchester United supporters, acknowledging their unwavering backing during his time as captain. He regarded leading the club as a tremendous honor and one of the proudest moments in his career. The defender also thanked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for initially entrusting him with the responsibility and offered his best wishes to his successor, assuring them of his complete support.

Rumors suggest that Manchester United is eager to offload Maguire during the summer transfer window in order to generate funds for other signings. West Ham, fresh off their triumph in the Europa Conference League, have emerged as potential suitors for the English player.
